Inland Goose and Duck Shooting

Shooting PartyDuring the winter months in Orkney, the sound of clamouring geese fill the air as thousands of Greylag and pink-footed geese leave their roosting grounds heading for the stubble or grass fields to feed. Because of light shooting pressure goose numbers are on the increase annually and thus provide the wildfowler with some spectacular flights. Geese are either flighted as they leave the lochs or decoyed as they arrive at the fields, decoys and hides are provided although feel free to bring your own. The evening duck flights, widgeon especially, can be exciting and guns can be kept busy.

The shooting is organised and run by Graham Adamson, BASC Registered Goose Guide whose knowledge and experience Shooting with a gun dogwill make for a memorable stay in Orkney. Wings 'n' Things guests are picked up each morning and transported by Land Rover to the best location selected for prevailing weather conditions. Parties of up to a maximum of 4 guns are catered for and it is our policy not to mix groups, each party is guided for on an individual basis.

Although no statutory time restrictions apply in Scotland. Graham follows the code of practice published by BASC and in the interests of good shooting practise and conservation, shooting is limited to one hour before and two hours after sunrise, one hour after sunset for ducks. A bag limit of four geese per gun / flight and five ducks per gun / flight is imposed and lead free shot is required for both geese and ducks.
